Adult Oncology Department
About The Department
The Adult Oncology Department is one of the most important medical departments at Warith International Cancer Institute due to its significant role in receiving a large number of patients annually to provide consultative and therapeutic services. The department aims to offer the best and most advanced therapeutic services based on the latest globally accepted treatment guidelines to achieve optimal outcomes for cancer patients being treated in the department. These protocols and treatment guidelines include modern therapeutic approaches based on:
1. Chemotherapy
2. Immunotherapy
3. Biological therapy
4. Hormonal therapy
5. Targeted therapy
The department manages the patient throughout his treatment journey, starting from the diagnosis and medical consultations to the treatment phase and follow-up. The treatment journey also includes palliative care and pain relief methods. The department's physicians work closely with doctors from other departments and multidisciplinary scientific committees to establish the best comprehensive treatment plans for cancer patients.
The department includes two main wards: the inpatient ward and One Day Chemotherapy Department
Adult ward
The adult inpatient ward is dedicated to providing medical services for patients with cancer. This includes not only those undergoing drug treatment for cancer but also encompasses the following:
1. Patients admitted for chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and biological therapy.
2. Patients receiving palliative care.
3. Patients needing admission due to treatment complications from cancer medications, such as cases of immunosuppression associated with fever (Neutropenic Fever).
4. Patients requiring medical interventions from other specialties due to complications arising from cancer.
The ward consists of eighteen single rooms that offer comprehensive hotel-like services according to international standards, ensuring patient safety while allowing each patient privacy with one family member in the room. Medical services in this ward are provided by a team of Iraqi and Arab doctors specialized in oncology, supported by a nursing staff experienced in administering and managing chemotherapy, biological, and immunotherapy treatments.
All patients are monitored 24 hours a day by a specialized medical and nursing team. They communicate with the Infection Control Department to hand over patients daily and inform them about invasive procedures before they are performed. They also prepare Foley catheters, central lines, and polysites. Additionally, they follow up on cultural results and implement necessary isolation measures per the issued guidelines. Each patient is also followed up periodically by therapeutic nutrition specialists, as this is of great importance as an integral part of the patient’s treatment journey.
Patient Education and Support:
During the treatment period, the staff examines the patient, evaluates symptoms and side effects, answers the family’s questions and concerns about treatment, and provides them with detailed information about the treatment journey, with careful follow-up by the psychological support team.
Department Features:
• Providing complete privacy for the patient during dosage administration while maintaining complete confidentiality of the case.
• Continuous doctor rounds on the floors to check the patient’s condition during his stay.
• There is a psychological support department that visits patients daily to provide psychological support in their treatment journey.
• The therapeutic service is integrated and comprehensive in cooperation with various other medical specialties.
One-Day Chemotherapy Department
The department is located on the ground floor and has 4 beds and 10 comfortable chairs for patients, ensuring complete privacy for their comfort during the infusion. The unit accommodates 14 patients per shift, and the intake can increase based on the duration of treatment, allowing for up to 20 patients. The department provides a comprehensive range of chemotherapy, biological, and immunotherapy services for all types of cancerous diseases according to internationally approved treatment protocols and guidelines and through a specialized medical staff of various Arab nationalities from several Arab countries to provide distinguished hospital services for our patients that spare them the need to travel outside Iraq. This department differs from the inpatient department in that the protocols given to patients are short-term treatment protocols that do not require hospitalization for more than one day.
The nursing staff explains the procedure to the patient before administering chemotherapy. They verify the patient's identity, ensure the correct medications and treatment protocols, and review test results before starting the treatment. The patient is closely monitored for side effects and to ensure that the treatment protocol is administered safely to the patient.
The level of nursing care that patients need varies, as some patients need little care, some need symptom management, and others need emergency resuscitation due to urgent side effects such as severe drug allergy, which requires continuous follow-up and monitoring by the medical and nursing staff who are present continuously while the patient is given his medication dose.
Review and Follow-up:
After the end of the treatment (dose), any symptoms that the patient experiences are monitored and followed up. Follow-up is also obtained when the patient returns for another session by asking him about the symptoms and problems that accompanied him during that period.
Patient Education and Support:
During the treatment period, the staff examines the patient, assesses symptoms and side effects, answers his questions and concerns about treatment, and provides him with detailed information about his treatment journey.
Department Features:
• Providing complete privacy for the patient while taking the dose while maintaining complete confidentiality of the case.
• Treatment costs are acceptable as they are supported by the Holy Shrine of Hussain.
